Several Watershed or sub-catchment areas
were selected in four major hydrological basins, namely the Tana River Basin
(Kenya), Pangani River Basin (Tanzania), Southern Rift Valley Lakes Basin
(Ethiopia), and Lake Bunyoni Catchment (Ugnada). It was agreed to concentrate
PhD research, master thesis research, and joint research projects in and around
these areas.
For better coordination, research-planning
workshops were held in Meru (Tana River Basin), Moshi (Pangani River Basin),
and Kabale (Lake Bunyoni Catchment). Students developed their research ideas
together with their supervisors, exchanged their findings and coordinated their
research activities with each other. The local people of the watersheds, like
members of Water Resources Users Associations, participated in these workshops
and were able to voice their needs and desires. Necessary monitoring equipment
(hydro-meteorological stations, soil moisture gauges) was established at
various places.
Summer Schools and expert seminars were
held to enabling exchange of research results and professional views,
incorporate the needs of local people like farmers, fishermen, and local
artisans. Participation between the stakeholders is one of tzhe key issues.
First research findings have been presented
to the public during Lars 2011 (Nairobi) and are going to be published (CICD
Series).
