Makerere University - Agricultural Research Institute PDF Print Email

The IWMNet project runs under the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and is under the School of Agricultural Sciences in the Department of Agriculture Production (formally Departments of Soil Science, Crop Science and Animal Science). The Department has some sub-units of which the Soil and Water Unit directly handles the IIWMNet project.

The Department has continued to excel in academic, training, research and establishment of national and international linkages. The Department has linkages with NARO, NAADS, CIAT-TSBF, EU, IDRC, FARA, RUFORUM, DAAD, ASARECA, UNCST,  other Governmental and Non Governmental Organizations. The Department also conducts consultancies for national and international projects.


The major mission is to achieve lasting and sustainable improvements in Agriculture, Agro-industry and livelihoods of the communities by producing knowledgeable and self-reliant professionals and practitioners and generating and disseminating client responsive knowledge and technologies .

Some of major objectives are to make training and research more relevant and demand driven service delivery and  expand and efficiently utilize resources at our disposal.
The units proposed in the collage of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences have multi-disciplinary staff and currently stands at about 190 academic staff.

The IWMNet project is currently running a number of activities, which are within the Makerere University mission and objectives. The capacity building programs for the PhD and Masters students are registering progress. The short courses targeting staff of the University and other officials in the Public Universities are also conducted. The extension services through the capacity building efforts of the local community have been done with the IWMNet project, particularly in harnessing the integrated approach in watershed management in the SW highlands of Uganda. The Project has spearheaded the commencement of the Masters of Science program in IWM in the Depatment, that is due for 2011 academic year.

Establishement of IWMNet Trust

IWMNet has been established as an International Network in form of a Trust on 21st of September 2011 in Kampala.The registration process has started in Kenya.
